Torae comes out of the gate strong with his manifesto to the game “Callin’ Me.” Khrysis sprinkles “Something To See” with some understated keys and Da Young Veteran gives perhaps his best performance of the LP; “Resident front man, why would you front man?/damn these beats, these bars, what more do they want man?/or maybe they want less, so I give’em all jus/ a little a taste test of the rawness, uh huh yes.” It is only backed by a passable beat, but “Journey Pt. 1” is pretty fascinating stuff regardless. Tor narrates his experiences over the years in the game; from Jay-Z to Cash Money.

Folks familiar with Torae will be a bit let down to see one of the two Primo contributions is “Click” featuring Skyzoo. Not that the horn-driven joint isn’t straight, it’s just that it’s mad old. Frequent M.O.P. collaborator Teflon comes through and tears up “Think About It,” one of the LP’s best songs and undoubtedly the hardest. Speaking of dope, Tor addresses the criticism that his flow is always the same with “Switch.” Over a pretty ridiculous Black Milk production, Tor indeed proves he can flip multiple styles with ease. Of course, showing that he can switch it up doesn’t change the fact that he rarely does. Speaking of switching things up, “Da Nigguz Is Commin” featuring Tash of Tha Alkaholiks takes things up a notch. Just another one of Khrysis’ stellar contributions to the album.

As Bay Area skratch institutions Bomb and Hip-Hop Slam have proven many times in the past, turntablism is most certainly a universal language. And nowhere is this more evident than on this new platter of brooding cuts, scrapes and concepts manufactured by the 12 hands of Italy's Alien Army. Most definitely on the compositional side of the turntablist universe, the 16 cuts here paint a dark, late-night picture - one that floats, grooves and morphs its way into your subconscious. The cutting here is certainly top-shelf and the imagineering quality is miles above most in their occupational strata. On the slow, freaky side, tracks like the appropriately named "Tales From The Dark Side Pt. 2," the horror film-inspired "Daily Nightmares" and the flanged, spacey "The Classic" are compelling and imaginative. And they rock it faster as well, on the funky, chopped jumper "Thronic Harmonic" and the jazz-inspired concoction "Scratchoetry."

Inner Loop Records drops a remix / street album of Nas’s classic album “Illmatic.” In promotion for the new Nas album “Untitled,” I felt the need to post this mixtape. A really well put together remix album. It consists of the original beats re-done and re-worked and then independent artists rhyming over them and sort of remixing Nas’s original lyrics. It’s a pretty cool concept and done well. Check it out.

“You see Bob, it’s not that I’m lazy, it’s that I just don’t care.” -Peter Gibbons

In 2007, no words rang truer for The Insomniaddicts than this transparent quote from the 1999 cult classic film “Office Space”. Building upon that note, Microphone Astronaut and The Wanderer have taken years of pent up work place angst and frustrations and have poured them into their second full length offering aptly titled “Office Space”, their first release on End Of Earth Records.

Both emcees take the listener on a journey from the moment the alarm clock blares all the way to quitting time and the inevitable water cooler drama that transpires in between. Micro is a starving artist trapped in the cubicle farm while The Wanderer waxes philosophical about the travails of the retail business. A slight departure from the melodic melancholy of Eventide Revery, Office Space is a short but sweet ten-track tribute that’s sure to hit home with anybody who’s ever had to endure the drama of the daily grind.

Sydney-based MCs Nick Lupi (20) and Just Enuff (21), collectively known as Spit Syndicate, possess an innate clarity and sophisticated synergy that belies their ages. These two prodigious talents have mastered a unique approach that marks a new and exciting sound for Obese Records and more importantly offers a fresh perspective seldom heard on these shores. Their debut album manages to blur conventional genre lines without ever losing touch with Oz Hip Hop's deep underground roots. This is “fresh breath” music.

Accentuated by adventurous flows that smash the monotonous structures too widely heard in today's Hip Hop, Towards the Light takes in the full spectrum of human experience without losing its momentum. From the fists in the air party vibe of Here Today, Gone Tomorrow to the intensely introspective On and On, Spit Syndicate portray a wisdom beyond their years. Political undertones ring through on The Lucky Country and the hard edged Weapon of Choice, while Lost Boys forges an anthem for the young men of the streets. The days of rapping about beer and bitches are well worn and Spit Syndicate demonstrate a new generation's ability to tackle issues of substance with hypnotising style.

formed by Mike Turner (Double K) and Chris Portugal (Thes
One), who met on the fringe of L.A.'s late-'90s hip-hop
underground. The duo, devoted to jazzy samples, danceable
beats, intricate rhyming skills, and laid-back humor, debuted
in 1998 with the acclaimed The Next Step and followed it up in
2000 with Question in the Form of an Answer. Gathering heavy
praise and touring with De La Soul, the group took their road
experiences and brought it to the studio to record their next

With Twilight Sentinels we not only hear the achievement of a great blast from the past reflective of the hip-hop Golden Era, but a successful oppositon of monotonus restraint of today's so called hip-hop. A wised up three man collective based out of Indianapolis that have shared their skills on stage with Kool Keith, we hear the mishmashing of jazz and hip-hop in "Smokescreen" that are remniscient of Slick Rick's musical sound. Given the resemblance, Twilight pair the music with great certainty in their lyrics and in the collaborating vocals of Joe Harvey and Mic L. Night that is not easily accessible and nailed with other hip-hop citizens today.

Veteran New York-based and Wu-Tang Clan affiliated emcees Hell Razah and
Shabazz the Disciple commit to shining a light on the Red Hook housing
projects that served as a creative breeding ground for many mid-nineties
independent emcees. Boasting a deeply rooted history with The Wu-Tang
Clan, Razah and Shabazz were core members of the storied Wu-Tang
affiliated group Sunz of Man, guested on RZA's classic Gravediggaz LP
and much more. Now, assuming the roles of tour guide, Razah and Shabazz
both pay homage to and illuminate the significance of the Red Hook
Houses in the development of early/mid nineties "golden age" hip-hop.

ASIO KIDS are two producers based in Munich and NYC. The first Asio Kids journey began in february 2002 with a trip to New York City, their backpack being stuffed with 2 powerbooks, a taped-up handmade microphone case and a box full of cables. they also carried a file of freshly brewed beats on harddrive with them. Producers whose beats are more avant-garde than those of the Asio Kids with their old-fashioned love for analog real sounds. But like an old master who had no idea of Hip Hop but of all other things said: The most innovative servants shall be those who know the old and love to transfer it to the new.

Mr. Green is a self taught, hip hop composer who takes a straight forward approach to his production. In just two short years, he has begun to make a name for himself by following his simple model "if it's a good beat, you can feel it in your chest, and it will make you want to knod your head". Originally a DJ, Mr. Green's first official production credit came at the end of 2006 on C Rayz Walz album "The Dropping". The song "Childhood" featured Matisyahu, the platinum Jewish Reggae sensation. Although it wasn't released as a single, the song recieved critical acclaim and is considered a classic among C Rayz Walz and Matisyahu fans alike. In the summer of 2007, Mr. Green released a solo project entitled "Green Future". The album was a fusion project consisting half of instrumentals and half of complete songs. The album features several notable Mc's such as Killah Priest, Pacewon, Cymarshall Law, Frankie Krutches, Rob Kelly (Ireland), Drago Balti (Tunisia) and Baby Blue (England).

40 Winks are known for their laidback atmospheres and vibes. However, after 5 years of looking for the perfect beat, they decided to break free from the usual mold and dive into the unknown for this project. Having reached listeners in different scenes and parts of the world, they decided to incorporate all those genres and styles into their own, to create an instrumental hip hop album in which the traditional boundaries of rhythms, tempos and sampling techniques are wildly stretched. Instrumental hip hop aficionado or not, music lovers are bound to find a treat in this one!

What a breath of fresh air this album is! Pasobionic, one of Australia’s stalwart hip hop producers who has supplied tunes for the likes of Curse Ov Dialect and Symbiotic Sound System, deserves three cheers for this album with its obvious commitment to musicianship and meticulousness. From first to last this record constitutes a clever, atmospheric set of hip hop instrumentals.

Without the distractions of someone else’s lyrics determining the listener’s experience of the collection (there’s no rapping whatsoever, and very few vocal samples), I think this record will prove more a versatile and long-lasting experience for both hip hop and general listener alike. Alternatively, and as the title suggests, if you’ve been writing raps and want to try them out over some top quality atmospheric beats this is definitely worth checking out.

Most of the tunes tend toward the downtempo end of the hip hop scale, but remain warm and clever enough to sustain interest. The surreal, circus feel of ‘Empty Beat 4’ and the more uptempo jingly atmospherics of ‘Echoes of Blue’ were real stand-outs in this sense- supplying character and fun through instrumentation rather. More wistful moments can be found on tracks like ‘Empty Beat 5’ and the fantastic opener ‘Empty Beat 1’. Crunchy mid tempo breaks can be found in ‘Hollow Bones’ and the wonderfully dark ‘Dislocated’.

This offering by the eclectic hip-hop/electronica duo Hermitude includes "Tapedeck Sound," "Plunge," and "Dub's Theme."

Hermitude- the Blue Mountains production duo of Luke Dubs and Elgusto turn the heat right up with the album 'Tales of the Drift', a testament to the maturity of their instinctively warm, intricate arrangements. Although undoubtedly hip hop by nature, Hermitude stitch together a bed of jazz, funk and Cuban rhythms, then weave delicate melodies and deft electronic touches through it. Guests vocals from The Herds Urthboy and Ozi Batla, as well as Melbourne via London vocalist Blu MC. Elefant Track.

Akim and Dumi Right of Zimbabwe Legit were destined for the history books as one of the first African Hip Hop groups to drop on a major American label. Unfortunately dark clouds emerged, the label went under and an unlucky thirteen years passed before Brothers From the Mother saw the light of day. Much like Raw Produce, the group of Pro Se Recordings bigwig and ZL collaborator Cadence, the 90's had other plans. House of Stone's foundation signifies a new era for the pioneers with African tradition firmly in tow, layered with Jazzy textures and cameos by legends that might have you asking which borough they're from, not which continent.

The name of the game of House of Stone seems to be guests, guests and more guests. In fact, the lively "Gotta Do" stands as the lone platform for Dumi and Akim to get busy uninterrupted. The roster includes artists that made their mark both prior to and during Zimbabwe Legit's decade layoff. They'll transport you all the way back to the 80's with "Where I'm At" featuring Mike G of the Legendary Jungle Brothers, plus the larger-than-life Chubb Rock joins Vast Aire as they attempt to "Wake 'Em Up". Legendary is one term that could be tossed around several times in this review. House of Stone's lyrical content is often intended to inspire, uplift and educate, whether it's overcoming struggle on "Vicious Cycle" co-starring YZ and Emskee, or reclaiming Hip Hop with the help of Cadence, Breez Evahflowin' and Apani. As soon as the infectious piano drops, "Evil That Men Do" shines amongst the pack. Prince Po delivers but it's Stic Man's verse that strikes a nerve. "They say it's wrong to steal a loaf of bread off of the shelf, I say it's wrong to have bread and keep it all for yourself."

The current, popular understanding of the term "Diorama" denotes a partially three-dimensional, full-size replica or scale model of a landscape typically showing historical events, nature scenes or cityscapes, for purposes of education or entertainment. DJ Okawari fully encapsulates every bit of that meaning in this album. Japanese jazzy hip-hop at its finest, people! Don't sleep on it
