Avenue To was born when 2 hip hop producers, Oddisee and The
Unknown, began collaborating with Kolai, a musician and
producer who had, until then, mostly put out dance music.
Exchanging ideas and contributing to each others musical
efforts was a pleasant experience from the beginning. Soon
the urge to create a larger picture became unescapable.
Kolai had always demonstrated a true thirst for real
musicianship in his dance tracks. His work almost always
includes live solos, string arrangements, and brass
sections. Oddisee and The Unknown created a collection of
beats with a particular organic touch. Their idea was to
work with Kolai to flesh out those beats with live
musicians. They approached him with this idea and Kolai
jumped at the opportunity.
“I love Hip-Hop” he says “but I get annoyed when it’s clear
a beat was produced in 10 minutes…” “What’s the point?” he
muses… “I didn’t spend 20 years learning music to forget
everything just because sampling is popular!”
“That’s what’s so amazing about working with [Oddisee and
The Unknown] those guys!” he adds throwing his arms in the
air “Even if they do produce a beat in 30 minutes, it seems
they took 3 hours: First of all you won’t recognize where
the samples came from. Second: The way they twist those
samples is artistic and the result is more than the summ of
its parts. THAT is music. THAT makes me get out of bed in
the morning. THAT is what I live for.”
Thus Avenue To was born. “Three Way Intersection” their
debut album will be available on July 08.
