Jean Grae Says Goodbye To Hip-Hop?

It looks like Jean Grae is bidding adieu to the record industry.

In a new blog on her MySpace page, the Brooklyn emcee thanks all of her fans for their support and gives salutations to hip-hop, with a finalizing tone.

“It's been a wonderful and awful journey all at the same time. Mostly leaning towards the wonderful part..lol. Thank you for letting me share what I could with you and sharing yourselves back, as you have really been the reason that I kept on,” she types. “I will always love what I consider to be true hip hop music... from the bottom of my soul. I hope you will continue to distinguish those who are contributors to the evolution of Hip Hop and other black music as both an auditory stimulation and a culture, taking care that they are put in a position to do so.

She ends the note saying, “Enjoy…see y’all around. It’s been amazing. Thank you again

Her profile name on MySpace has also been changed to “Jean Grae Saying Peace Out,” and her only remaining profile picture is of her apparently blowing a kiss goodbye.

Jean Grae joined Blacksmith Music, Talib Kweli’s label imprint under Warner Bros, in September 2005. She was set to formally release Jeanius, the heavily-bootlegged and delayed album produced entirely by 9th Wonder, later this year.

Flying Lotus (né Steven Ellison) is a hip-hop music producer, disc jockey, and laptop musician from Winnetka, California. His debut album, 1983, was released on Plug Research Records in 2006. He is most famous (yet also uncredited) for the music in the many of the segues of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, and he has also contributed remixes to fellow Plug Research artists, including Mia Doi Todd. His great-aunt is the late Alice Coltrane. He is affectionately referred to as 'FlyLo' by fans and critics.

Flying Lotus is commonly identified as a hip hop producer, but his style is drawn from many genres, including jazz, electronic and Brazilian music. His hip hop beats are unique for their hazy, ambient sound, while his percussion is purposefully slightly off time, creating a messier, more organic atmosphere. Because of this, he is often likened to producers such as Madlib,LeRoi Da Moor and J Dilla.

Following up last year's widely successful "Eastern Philosophy" on Babygrande, a tour with Mike Shinoda's Fort Minor, and a buzzstirring "Baptism By Fire" mixtape, Apathy returns with the highly anticipated 2nd installment of his popular "It's the Bootleg, Muthafuckas!" series. Just like 2003's "Volume 1", this compilation continues in the tradition of being a chock-full double disc (2CD) limited edition set. 38 digitally mastered tracks in all, this eye-opening collection includes mostly unreleased vaulted material spanning the earlier years of his career up to his Atlantic Records recording sessions. In addition, there are 12" only songs, collaborations, freestyles and remixes never previously released in CD format. Apathy, the frontman of his highly respected Demigodz crew, is an underground veteran who has been making and appearing on timeless indie hip hop records since 1997, beginning with Jedi Mind Tricks' "Psycho-Social" album and following up with countless classic 12" vinyl singles from the now defunct but legendary late 90's indie label, Bronx Science. "Hell's Lost & Found" represents a strong staple in the underground hip hop genre and will be a must-have item for all Apathy, Fort Minor and Demigodz associated fans worldwide.

Returning after a silent nine year hiatus since his limited debut Welcome to Broakland on Bomb Hip Hop in '99, soulful rapper/songwriter Grip Grand drops his brand new album, Brokelore! Growing up with hip hop all his life, the emcee and producer never found it hard to adapt as his family led a nomadic-like lifestyle that took him up and down the West Coast, from LA to Portland...but the artist typically identifies himself with the Bay Area as adulthood grounded him in one place. Featuring a range of diverse styles throughout the album, Grip even manages a little humor as he parodies current commercial gangsta rap sounds dominating the radio. This is probably the real surprise of the week, as Grand is virtually unknown to some and hopes to re-introduce himself with notable guest appearances by Percee P, AG, MF Shalem, DJ Design and more!

Sweden's Looptroop laid their roots when hip hop was not yet the global movement it is today. In the mid 1990s, most European hip hop was little more than a bleak copy of the American template, but Promoe, Supreme, CosM.I.C and DJ Embee forged a new identity that was international in its scope while simultaneously reflecting their own unique position in the world.

Following numerous cassette and vinyl releases on their own David Vs Goliath imprint, they released a series of seminal albums, expanding their scope from 2000's subway manifesto Modern Day City Symphony to 2005's epic state-of-the-continent address Fort Europa.

Now, Promoe, Supreme and DJ Embee are back as the trio Looptroop Rockers (though CosM.I.C is still in the fold as their web designer) with their definitive artistic statement. Good Things is as musically diverse an album as hip hop has produced and finds Looptroop as socially conscious and politically fierce as ever, while maintaining a subliminal feel good vibe.

The first single, "The Building" Is the perfect blend of revolutionary fire and uplifting sonic assault.

Young Max and Pat Stash's careers in the business have spanned just two and a half short years. In that time though, their straight up, honest approach to their trade (both producing and rapping) has had a pretty significant impact on the scene.

'The Pleasure Is All Mine' does not disappoint! 13 tracks of high quality, honest hip hop music. 'The Pleasure…' delivers a more developed sound from the guys, displaying a thoughtful, more mature approach to their music, but still managing to retain that sense of humour that has won them fans across the board.

Grammy award winning hip-hop trailblazers The Roots are set to release Rising Down on April 29th via Def Jam Recordings. Known for their prolific lyrics and live instrumentation, the Legendary Philadelphia crew is composed of Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter (vocals), Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (drums), Kamal Gray (keyboards), Frank Knuckles (percussion), Kirk "Captain Kirk" Douglas (guitar) and Owen Biddle (bass). Garnering critical praise throughout their career, The Roots have firmly established themselves as a band with uncompromised artistic control and integrity. With Rising Down, the band's 10th album release, The Roots continue to take bolder steps adding new depths and range to their repertoire. The Roots co-founder ?uestlove states, "This is probably our most political album to date dealing with addiction, nihilism, hypocritical double standards in the prison system and overall life in Philadelphia. I'd say it's more mature and intense than all of our efforts but not a `downer' as most people expect us to do."

The political nature of Rising Down is not only heard within the music. The title comes from William T. Vollmann's treatise on violence entitled Rising Up and Rising Down, and the release date falls on the 16th anniversary of the Los Angeles riots sparked by the acquittal of the police officers accused of beating Rodney King.

Standout tracks include: "Criminal" a reflection of life on the streets and unjust persecution, "I Will Not Apologize" a tribute to Fela Kuti that discusses keeping dignity in the music biz and "I Can't Help It" a look at addictions and urges that compel us all. Additional guests on the album include Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Saigon, Dice Raw, Wale, Chrisette Michele and more.

Vast Aire and longtime friend and fellow emcee Karniege stand united against all that attempts to destroy the streets of the city that never sleeps. The Mighty Joseph project itself was shaped over a three year period and documents the struggles of the duo in times of rapid change both personal and pertaining to the streets. From poverty, to 9/11, and the misuse and exploitation of hip hop culture in the media, Empire State is a harbinger of the uncertainty to come. Both Vast Aire and Karniege are at the top of their game here and work well together over production from Madlib, J-zone, 4th Pyramid, and Camu Tao to name a few, with guest appearances by Vordul Mega, Murs, Poison Pen and more!

To start the year off right, the entire Living Legends crew locked down at Encore Studio (Dr Dre’s The Chronic 2001, Eminem Marshall Mathers LP, etc.) to record The Gathering. Each song in this brand new collection features every single MC on every single track, and it is definitely the most fully realized and well crafted batch since their inception. Led by a socially conscious anthem for peace, the Los Angeles via San Francisco area crew are doing their civic duty, while not forgetting to move the crowd with heavy bangers, catchy hooks and fire-spitting verses, celebrating all of their true roots. The Gathering, a precursor to a full length coming in late ‘08, serves to warn the greater hip hop massive: Don’t forget the longtime leaders of the Wild West coast!

When Electric Night Falls was created in the evening,
developed with the electricity that breaks our perception of
time and allows us to survive off more than just the sun's
energy. Hip-hop is an electric culture. Without electricity
there would be no turntables. No turntables, no DJ. No third
rail, no subways, which means the train culture of graffiti
would not exist. We plug our mic in and channel our voices
through electrical wires. In the city it's an electric night
that falls. The day begins as the day ends, looking toward
the evening ahead, it follows the mind through a night of
creation, compassion, comparison and congestion, only to
wake up from a world of chaos. In the end, the thought of
leaving is explored, but like every other day the cycle
continues and other options are developed. For Bisc this is
music; it is art; it is creative expression to release the
energy, the electricity built up in him that must be
discharged."

His 1996 debut album, Episodes of a Hustler, was released during a period of incarceration for the infamous Big Noyd. Nevertheless, many consider it a classic.

Big Noyd returns with the release of his new album, Illustrious on KOCH Records. The album is executive produced by Lil’ Fame of M.O.P. and features appearances by Joell Ortiz, Kira, and Serani.

After three years 71Raw has put together another underground Hip-Hop album entitled "Ninja Guidance," which was produced by Anthai da Protagonist. The album is honored to have guest appearances from Wu-Tang affiliated, including Beretta 9 (Killarmy), Black Knights, Christ Bearer (Northstar), Solomon Childs, and Pesha (Blackball Ent.). It was 71Raw's goal to make an album that would take their fans back to the music of the golden Hip-Hop era that they grew up on: 90's Hip-Hop! And, "Ninja Guidance" became the end result. Without any phony A&R or any type of management telling them how to make their album, 71Raw had 100% full control of their creativity to make this album raw and rough for their fans. This album will take you back to the days of Blackmoon, Wu-Tang, Boot Camp, and Gangstarr – 18 songs that will make you crave for more raw sh#t!!! So, sit back and let your mind become saturated with the raw and grimy lyrics of 71RAW.

The 71Raw sound is definitely one of a kind -- something that can't be found in mainstream hip-hop today. It's grimy, dark, spiritual, fundamental, lyrical, and, most importantly, it's "Raw".

Fabric favorite DJ Yoda gets his heavily anticipated crack at the FabricLive series. FabricLive 39 drops next month.

Yoda has long been a DJ’s DJ with an anything-goes approach to track selection and a sharp sense of humor. He took the 2001 DMC Scratch DJ of the Year award, and he has released three installments of a highly-regarded mixtape series How to Cut & Paste. In 2006 he produced a full-length The Amazing Adventures of DJ Yoda, which saw collaborations with longtime hip-hop heroes Biz Markie and Jungle Brothers.

FabricLive 39 reflects Yoda’s all-encompassing love of music that makes you dance, promising to smash together hip-hop, gangster rap,‘80s pop, soul, Baltimore club, drum ‘n bass and dubstep across 25 tracks. Yoda might not take himself too seriously, but just don’t call him ironic: “Irony pisses me off in music. None of the stuff I do is ironic—it annoys me when people say I’m trying to be ironic. I have [one] simple rule: if I love a song, I’ll play it. I’m just playing the music that I honestly love.”

Up from the underground powerhouse that is The Demigodz (Apathy, Celph Titled, Styles of Beyond) comes Motive, a sharply-calibrated MC with raw charisma and true street sensibility. After first appearing on the 2002 Ill Boogie/Caroline Demigodz EP, The Godz Must Be Crazy, Motive has been a staple within the crew that has enjoyed great independent success due to its cult-like following. In true East Coast fashion, NJ-bred, Connecticut representer Motive a/k/a "Hoody 2 Shoez" brings out his debut solo CD + DVD release, Mo-llinium: The Takeover Begins. This 24 track disc is a mixtape album professionally packaged and includes a DVD showcasing behind the scenes footage and music videos for some of the tracks contained on the mixtape. The album features original production from Apathy and Chum the Skrilla Guerilla as well as many cleverly manipulated old school and industry standards. Fellow crew members Celph Titled, Apathy, Esoteric and Styles of Beyond all make appearances and help make Motive's debut a banger from start to finish. This release comes as a follow-up to Mo's 2007 European Tour with Apathy and Main Flow as well as his continuous buzz appearances on major releases such as Apathy's Eastern Philosophy, Green Lantern and Styles of Beyond's Razor Tag, Apathy's It's the Bootleg 2xCD collection, and his role in the 2006 independent film, 6 Brothaz In A Cadillac, alongside Wildchild (of Lootpack), Slim Kid Tre (of Pharcyde) and other underground cohorts such as Mighty Casey and Oktober. With Mo-llinium showcasing Motive's sound, solo projects from fellow crew members due to surface this year, and a full-length Demigodz LP currently in the works . . . let the takeover begin!

Del is an artist who helped set the standard for the new mold of MC/Hip Hop artist. In 1991, with the release of I Wish My Brother George Was Here, and shortly after with No Need For Alarm in 1993, he laid the blueprint for the new west coast sound. His last solo album, Both Sides Of The Brain was released in 2000 on Hiero Imperium, the label he founded with other members of his Hieroglyphics crew. Del's impact on the music world did not end with his solo work, or even the albums his label released. At the beginning of the new millenium, Del branched out and through his work with Dan the Automator on the Deltron 3030 record and later with the Gorillaz multi platinum first album (and on which he voiced the hit single, "Clint Eastwood"). Del’s continued pushing of the boundaries in the art of MCing proves that talent and versatility can make rap relevant outside the traditional boundaries of the genre. Eleventh Hour ends a hiatus for Del the Funky Homosapien, one of the world’s most uniquely brilliant rap artists. It is classic material, full of lyrical twists and turns, forthright yet deeply subtle and metaphorical in its exploration of life in the Bay Area. It is a triumphant return for one of the pioneers of underground hip-hop culture.
